➤ "… rousing, captivating, atmospheric and brimming with ideas … a mature, varied and emotionally gripping work … after these barely 47 minutes, everything simply cries out for more anthems, more stories and a third chapter from the world of “Diablo” … bloody brilliant … if OLD RUINS actually manage to surpass this standard yet again, I’ll probably have to give it an 11 out of 10."
(Obliveon)

➤ "… these bombastic songs completely distract you from normal brain activity. It’s also worth noting that the band from the Ruhr region don’t limit themselves exclusively to the Black Metal genre; ‘Call To Arms’, for example, could easily be described as standard riff-driven heavy metal … I pay my respects to Christian, Ersin, Mike and Oliver and award them an armada of ten stars. You can’t get any better than that."
(Sonic Realms)

➤ "… OLD RUINS deliver exactly what you’d hope for from a band that’s come into its own. Harder, more atmospheric, more melodic and more self-assured than ever before. 'Mount Arreat' isn’t some nerdy album for 'Diablo' fans, but a cracking Extreme Metal album with a clear identity … varied, gripping and full of strong tracks … this album is set to be right up there with the best in Melodic Black Metal this year. Anyone who gives this album a miss has only themselves to blame."
(Saitenkult)
8,5 / 10
➤ "… OLD RUINS prove that their connection to the world of ‚Diablo‘ goes far beyond lyrical inspiration. Epic melodies, melancholic atmosphere and aggressive blackened heaviness turn the album into a journey of its own, carried by strong musicianship and genuine passion … when storytelling and music come together, ‚Mount Arreat‘ becomes remarkably immersive. A journey through Sanctuary well worth taking."
(Headbangers Australia)
8,5 / 10
➤ "… a crystal-clear, very transparent and, at the same time, wonderfully powerful sound … you can really sit back with your headphones on and enjoy it … I could rave about almost every track … I really like this album, quite simply because you can sense the attention to detail that’s gone into it, without it ever sounding sterile or clinical for a single second. Even though there are people who claim you can’t hear the passion in music - for those who can – give it a listen!"
(Powermetal DE)
8,5 / 10
➤ "… powerful production … plenty of power … still a force to be reckoned with … a whole host of killer riffs … even in the more melancholic, quieter moments, they remain in complete control …
improved songwriting compared to their equally strong debut … a wider range of influences … the standard of playing has been raised yet again … everything has been refined to a higher level … reminiscent of Bathory or Dissection, without copying them … yet this meticulously crafted album is brutally hard-hitting and not overly cerebral. That’s the art of it … there are plenty of details here that you don’t really notice straight away … it has hardly any competition in its own niche … an absolute must-buy.
(Neckbreaker)

➤ "… a beautiful opus for all of us who love their Black Metal melodic and aggressive at the same time … 'Once There Was Light' shows almost mystical beauty … and the title song which is my favorite on this opus … slower doomy parts and atmospheric epic ones fit perfectly …"
(Kraykulla Zine)
80 / 100
➤ "… a successful blend of Black Metal and Heavy Metal … numerous and highly effective guitar riffs … more accessible passages … the opening track, ‘Once There Was Light’, also features these brilliant variations, and we even hear some rare clean vocals … a great album that will provide plenty of listening pleasure for many Black Metal fans who are open to some ‘calmer’ and more melodic moments."
(Musika BE)
8 / 10
➤ "… follows the good old Dissection style, and Old Ruins pull it off brilliantly. The eight songs are packed with great melodies and often make you think of classic Metal rather than typical Black Metal … in addition, the guitars often bring to mind the old Gothenburg school of In Flames or Dark Tranquillity. A strong second album that deserves an audience!"
(Deaf Forever)

➤ "… the epic title track pays homage to Quorthon; it automatically makes the hair on a barbarian’s chest stand on end and makes you want to charge into battle with a double-headed axe drawn … OLD RUINS achieves exactly what you’d ideally hope for from the follow-up to a strong debut album. The band from Gelsenkirchen continues to build on the foundation they’ve laid and refines their sound without watering it down …"

➤ "… excellent … unique blend of melodic, catchy and gripping Black and Death Metal for fans of In Flames, Children Of Bodom, Arch Enemy, and Tribulation, inspiring us all to join them in their darkened quest …"
(The Metal Moose)
➤ "… it feels like a fantasy adventure set to music … at times stormy, at times melancholic, at times brutal. But always with passion and a clear vision. If you’re into melodic extreme Metal with atmosphere, powerful guitar melodies, and a healthy dose of adventure, you absolutely must climb this mountain."
(The Anti Archive)
➤ "The sound is more mature, more epic, more brutal … musically, the band picks up where they left off with their debut, but steps it up a notch in every respect. ‘Mount Arreat’ sounds significantly heavier, more polished and atmospherically denser. OLD RUINS have once again managed to write hooks that make you want to sing along straight away, without losing the dark underlying tone."
(MetalZone - Support the Underground)
➤ "Melodic Black Metal with a heavy old-school heartbeat … in a style where it's easy to fall into endless tremolo picking or overloaded symphonic arrangements, the Germans manage to keep the aggression while bringing back something that sometimes gets lost: memorable riffs."
(Papy Jeff)
➤ "… a magnificently hard-hitting yet melodically rich concept album … a clever mix of Black Metal blast beats, soaring guitar solos, and modern riffing (‘Nihlathak’) … the dynamism these Gelsenkirchen-based musicians bring to the table here is truly worthy of praise."
(Sonic Seducer)
➤ "Why the hell aren't they much better known?! … top-notch … a rousing mix of melodic Black Metal (with a slight Melodeath lean), interspersed with brilliant traditional Heavy Metal riffs … the songwriting is varied, keeps the tension high throughout, and there are absolutely no weaknesses. 'Mount Arreat' is an absolute blast from start to finish … this band can do it all …"
(Sandro Rocks On)
➤ "Some of the songs remind me strongly of the old Dissection, and that’s exactly what immediately brought back some fond old memories for me … a brilliant, well-thought-out album that’s a success from start to finish and never gets boring for a single minute … definitely a statement in the Black Metal scene … already a long-standing favourite of mine …"
(Moshmaster Metalzine)
➤ "… epic anthems … powerful guitar work … a journey from epic heavy metal to equally epic Black Metal … brilliant stuff, lads!"
(Vampster)
➤ "… incredibly catchy … a fantastic blend of various different subgenres … at it's core it's definitely a Melodic Black Metal album … so if you're a fan of the likes of Dissection, Bathory, Thulcandra with a little bit of early In Flames, this one is definitely for you - I absolutely love this album. It's fiery, it's intense, it's incredibly atmospheric, but really heavy at the same time …"
(The Heavy Metal Journal)
➤ "… establishes OLD RUINS as one of the most interesting bands in the German Melodic/Post-Black Metal underground, combining a fascination with the ‚Diablo‘ universe with well-crafted, melodic, and intense compositions. It is highly recommended for fans of Dissection, classic In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, and Epic Metal with a dark atmosphere."
(Rock And Metal Releases)
➤ "… impressive … cements OLD RUINS’ position at the forefront of the German underground Extreme Metal scene … uncompromising, warlike harshness with a sense of epic grandeur and an intensely piercing atmosphere … far from generic, disposable, it plunges into a frozen and merciless journey across the wildest peaks … a work of monumental impact …"
(Metal World United)
➤ "… OLD RUINS have once again demonstrated that great Metal storytelling can come from a place of genuine passion and authenticity … blackened Death soundscapes infused with epic themes and powerful classic Metal melodies … a journey well worth taking …"
(Highwire Daze)
➤ "… the song structures are fairly straightforward and verge on authentic Heavy Metal … their style significantly tones down the eerie and sombre grandeur, instead imbuing the sound with narrative depth and a sense of fantasy – reminiscent of a slightly more restrained AMON AMARTH."
(Burrn!)
➤ "The way in which they compose and produce the songs in a theatrical and orchestral style to bring the chronicle to life, whilst varying the mood and atmosphere and using the vocals to illustrate every character and every sequence of the plot … sounds and feels like a sword-and-sorcery epic that spans timeless worlds from 'Excalibur' (1981) to the 'Lord of the Rings' saga (2001–2003) and beyond … bridges the gap between extreme metal, analogue production, high-tech gaming and pure fantasy, and demonstrates the kind of creativity that can emerge when a project is realised with passion and confidence."
(Dave Wolff - Asphyxium Zine)
➤ "…… an incredibly gripping blend of Black and Heavy Metal … a powerful, perfectly produced soundtrack for cold days. Captivating for gamers and a real highlight for fans of atmospheric Metal. The album is really well produced, and both the record and the cover artwork are beautifully designed. A great deal of love has gone into it.""

➤ "OLD RUINS do a lot of things right on their debut 'Always Heading East', above all they know how to create an atmosphere that sweeps the listener along and where it doesn't matter if you know the source of inspiration or set off ignorantly down the dark paths to Tristram. (Flight Of Pegasus)
➤ "In many ways, the album hits those emotions that grab you, consume you and at the same time are delivered so (almost) elegantly that you just want more all the time … there are elements of several branches of Metal, but imagine some of the early In Flames, a little Children Of Bodom, a little Arch Enemy and then add a little Tribulation and mix it well together, and you have the sound of OLD RUINS - presented here on a really good album that will surely appeal to many."

| FFO: | In Flames, Dark Tranquillity, Dissection |
| Type: | Full-length |

OLD RUINS was founded in 2019 and was initially supposed to be a pure studio project of drummer Alexander Czernik and singer/lead guitarist Christian Krajewski. But the thus only really hungry players quickly developed a damn dark, very atmospheric sound, which is still not easy to categorize and which remains not least because of this permanently as fascinating as exciting and wear-free.
Just as OLD RUINS were making their first plans for their stage debut, the Lord of Destruction had other plans and brought a pandemic upon the world. However, OLD RUINS were not discouraged by this and began in August 2020 with the recordings of the completely convincing 6-track debut EP "Old Ruins", which physically and digitally passed the gates of hell on November 06, 2020 and brought darkness from the heart of the Ruhr area over Tristram.
On September 15, 2023, OLD RUINS released their debut full-length album, titled "Always Heading East", on Doc Gator Records, demonstrating the label’s impeccable taste.
"The lyrics lyrically refer to the video game classic 'Diablo' from Blizzard. The dark atmosphere of the game has always fascinated us immensely. Whether the tragic story without any happy ending, or the neglected (sound)worlds on 'Always Heading East' were the main inspiration is hard to say today", but "when you close your eyes and put the record on, you really dive into the mystical story of the dark wanderer", Christian Krajewski raves fervently, adding: "If you're not versed in the history of the video game, you can still immerse yourself in the dark musical world of the album and enjoy the soothingly atmospheric Black Metal sound. "
Where Iron Maiden have to deal with only one beast, the brave warriors of OLD RUINS are exposed to numerous spawns of hell. Face to face they bravely take on MEPHISTO the Lord Of Hate, LILITH - Daughter Of Mephisto and Queen Of The Succubi, TATHAMET The Seven-headed Dragon and BAAL The Lord Of Destruction.
Follow these exceptionally talented German top artists on their new adventures in "Always Heading East" and dive into a dark, atmospheric sound experience of a very special kind - inspired by the legendary world of Diablo!
